Comedian John Bishop is joined by his son Joe, who lost most of his hearing at age 15, to share their experience of deafness for an ITV documentary.

Co-produced by South Shore and Bishop’s Lola TV, the hour-long Joe & John Bishop: Life After Deaf will follow the father and son as they embark on a journey to better understand the deaf community and learn British Sign Language together in the hopes of better relating to each other.

John Bishop will set himself the goal of learning BSL well enough to be able to perform a stand-up comedy routine using it.

“Joe and I are so grateful to the members of the deaf community who we’ve met this year, their generosity has changed our lives,” added John Bishop.

The documentary was ordered for ITV’s main channel by head of entertainment commissioning Katie Rawcliffe and commissioner David Smyth.

Rawcliffe added that the documentary provides “a completely different side to John”.

Andrew Mackenzie and DDPTV co-director Caroline O’Neill are executive producers for South Shore, while John Bishop and Lisa Thomas exec for Lola TV. Charlie Melville is the director.

Bishop also hosts ITV’s topical comedy entertainment show The John Bishop Show, which launched in January of this year.
